Food Allergy Awareness Month | (Click To View Image)

  • 🥜🚫 May is Food Allergy Awareness Month! With millions experiencing food allergies, it’s important to know how to react in an allergic emergency. Do you know how to use an EpiPen?

Step-by-Step Guide to Using an EpiPen
    1. Recognize the Signs of a Severe Allergic Reaction: Trouble breathing, Hives or swelling, Tightness of the throat, Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea, Dizziness or fainting
    2. Prepare the EpiPen: Grasp the EpiPen with the orange tip pointing downward and remove the blue safety cap by pulling it straight off (never put your thumb, fingers, or hand over the orange tip).
    3. Administer the EpiPen: Hold the pen with your fist, orange tip pointing downward, place the orange tip against the middle of the outer thigh, push the EpiPen firmly into the thigh until you hear a click. This sound indicates the injection has started, hold the EpiPen in place for 3 seconds to ensure the full dose of medication is delivered. (You can administer the EpiPen through clothing if necessary.)
    4. After Injection: Remove the EpiPen from the thigh. The orange tip will extend to cover the needle. Massage the injection site for about 10 seconds to enhance absorption of the medication, Note the time of the injection as emergency responders will want to know.
    5. Seek Emergency Medical Help: Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately after using the EpiPen, even if symptoms appear to subside. Inform the dispatcher or medical staff that an epinephrine injection was administered, and further treatment may be necessary.
    6. Dispose of the EpiPen: Place the used EpiPen back into its protective case and give it to the emergency medical responders for proper disposal and to obtain a report.
