From Lake Health

Managing diabetes is a 24/7 responsibility. During emergencies, people with diabetes face particular challenges to their health so preparedness is key. For this reason, Lake Health recommends creating an emergency kit so you’re equipped with the items you need if you have to head out at a moment’s notice.

Your diabetes emergency kit should include all of the following items:

Testing supplies:
  • Extra test strips and lancets
  • Spare batteries for your meter and CGM
  • Sharps container (an empty water bottle)
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Wet wipes
  • Pencil and paper to record blood sugar results
Food and water:
  • Three liters of water per person
  • Non-perishable snacks to treat lows for two days: peanut butter crackers, granola bars, trail mix
  • Quick-grab carbs. Ideas include one six-ounce juice pack, six hard candies, two packs of Smarties, two tablespoons of raisins, or one tablespoon sugar
  • Glucose tablets
Important information:
  • Diabetes identification card or wearable ID
  • List of current prescriptions
  • Copy of insurance cards
  • Emergency phone numbers
  • A medical history summary that states your diabetes type, allergies and other health conditions
If you are taking insulin or hypoglycemic medication, pack:
  • Glucagon kit
  • Extra insulin syringes
  • Small Styrofoam cooler for insulin (store ice packs in freezer)
  • Foil-wrapped ketone test strips
  • Backup supplies for insulin pump (batteries, infusion sets)
